Smooth Transition: Healthy Habits for Back-to-School Success

Aug 05, 2024

As a busy mom, I understand how challenging it can be to transition from the laid-back days of summer to the structured routine of the school year. That's why it's important to ease your kiddos (and yourself) into the fall routine by implementing some healthy habits now. Here's how to make the transition smoother:

1. Establish a Bedtime Routine:
Creating a consistent nighttime routine can boost productivity and help kids succeed in school. While late summer nights are fun, fall is the time to rest so their bodies and brains can get stronger and smarter.
Example nighttime routine: no electronics 2 hours before bed, a warm bath or shower, reading in bed, and “lights out” by bedtime.

2. Set a Morning Routine:
Kids thrive on routine and tend to be less anxious when they know what's coming next. Stay consistent and figure out what works best for your family.
Establish an order so there are no surprises. Everyone knows what to do before it’s time to walk out the door. Find a sequence that works for your family—wake time, breakfast, getting dressed, hinge time, and off to school.

3. Incorporate Nutritious Foods:
Nutritious foods are essential for mental clarity, learning, and health. Get ahead of the illnesses that come with clusters of kids and winter weather by incorporating immune-boosting nutrients such as vitamin C (kiwis, oranges, red bell pepper) and protein (chicken and shellfish). Other immune boosters include garlic, ginger, and turmeric—try to incorporate these into meals when possible.
Tip: If your kiddo brings lunch to school, start packing it the night before. Would you like to see a post on what to put in your kiddo’s lunch box?

4. Foster Positivity:
Calm their nerves and ease their anxiousness with positivity. Talk about the fun they will have and how much they will learn this year.

Change can be uncomfortable, and it will be hard for kids (and parents alike) to adjust, but consistency is key. Establish these foundational, healthy habits now to set the kiddos up for success this school year!

Have a great start to your year!
